Rooted in Heritage. Growing with Vision.
On the slopes of Polkadraai Hills, Karibib Wine Estate cultivates grapes for over 26 bold, independent wine brands
— where nature, craft, and legacy meet.
Karibib Wine Estate is a 52 Ha estate on the Polkadraai Hills stretching to the west of Stellenbosch. The soils are ancient, degraded Dolomite, and the slopes are predominantly South-Southwest facing. Overlooking False Bay our vineyards are exposed to all the elements the cape of storms has to offer.
Jozua Joubert, third generation owner, stepped in as steward in 2010, he knew change was needed. Selling the entire production to big wineries just didn’t align with the vision Jozua had for the farm. So, he took a leap and started producing grapes for small producers.
The result? A tapestry of diverse wines and currently 26 incredible brands all making wine from the vineyards living on the Karibib Wine Estate slopes.
The Estate has 60 % red plantings mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinotage and othe smaller specialised plantings; while the 40 % white varietals include Chenin blanc and Sauvignon blanc. The oldest vineyard on the farm is 45 years old dryland bushvine Chenin Blanc planted by Jozua’s grandfather, and some of the new vineyards planted are Grenach Noir, Cinsualt and Gammay noir.
“Jozua has a passion for farming with nature and he believes in sustainability and health of the soils and vineyards on the Family owned Estate.”
The Terrior
Karibib Wine Estate is located to the west side of Stellenbosch and is part of a demarcated appellation called the Polkadraai Hills. The area is known for its ancient dolomite soils formed around 450 Million years ago. The soils have a medium to low growing potential and vineyards naturally have low yields. The Karibib Estate has predominantly South Eastern slopes with low solar irradiation – ensuring slow ripening of the harvest.
Our unique soils lends unique characteristics to our wines which is renowned for its salinity, minerality, finely textured tannins and aging potential
The Climate
Polkadraai Hills mostly faces False Bay about 20 km away which has a mediating effect on the climate, ensuring milder summer temperatures. The close proximity to the ocean also exposes our slopes to all the prevailing winds which has a profound impact during the growing season and shapes the way our vines grow.
The Philosophy
The Philosophy is simple – Sustainable farming and minimalistic winemaking makes better wines. From glyphosate-free vineyards and organic pest control to low-impact winemaking and eco-conscious packaging, we’re deeply committed to protecting the land we farm and the wines that come from it.
